This program juxtaposes the Art of
Fugue with two works that explore the idiom of the saxophone.
Belgian composer Jean Baptiste Singelée was asked to write his
Premier Quatuor by his countryman, Adolphe Sax; this substantial
Romantic opus is the first for the genre. Saxophonist and
composer Bob Mintzer is renowned for his performances with the jazz
ensemble, the Yellowjackets, and recently had a work performed by the
National Symphony.
