Atlantic Brass Quintet
Educational Programs
General Information

Since its inception in 1985, the Atlantic Brass Quintet has maintained a strong interest in music education.  The Quintet has given master classes, clinics, and residencies at major universities, colleges, and public schools throughout the world.  The ABQ has been in residence at Boston University and The Boston Conservatory.  From 1995 through 1999, they directed the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute; the Seminar moved to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2000, and has been in residence at the University at Buffalo since 2001.  Members of the ABQ hold faculty positions at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, The Boston Conservatory, and Louisiana State University.

In addition to extensive teaching and performing, the members of ABQ compose and arrange music for the Quintet.  In the effort to build a greater brass quintet repertoire, the group frequently commissions new works from young composers and seeks out contemporary works already in existence.  ABQ believes that working with student composers is an important part of this process, allowing the young composers to develop their writing skills through working with a professional ensemble.

The Atlantic Brass realizes the importance of interacting with young people, regardless of their musical background.  The Quintet frequently presents local and regional residencies across the United States, performing for students of all ages.  ABQ does this in hope of bringing the joys of playing music to those who have not yet taken up an instrument, and to inspire those already involved in music-making.

Within the quintet’s busy touring schedule, they frequently present master classes, including through the auspices of the Boston Celebrity Series Outreach Concerts; the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival; the University of Maryland; Louisiana State University; the Van Cliburn Foundation of Fort Worth Texas; the Visiting Artist Series in the Quad Cities; the University of Southern California; Royal Northern College in Manchester, England; the Royal Omani National Symphony School in the Sultanate of Oman; and the Cairo Opera House in Egypt.
